Serena Williams Makes Shock Return to Tennis at 44
Serena Williams has made a surprising comeback to the world of professional tennis, announcing her return at the age of 44. The American, who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, will compete in the doubles event at the HSBC Championships at the Queen’s Club in London next week. This marks her first competitive match in almost four years.
The tournament, which traditionally takes place before Wimbledon, opens the possibility of Williams making a return to the iconic Grand Slam event in London, set to begin on June 28. She has been granted a wildcard entry and will partner with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, who grew up idolizing the American.
Queen’s Club shared the news on Monday, stating: “The Queen returns! Serena Williams is back and set for doubles at the HSBC Championships.” Williams also took to social media, posting a video showing her on court in a white Nike tennis dress, with her phone buzzing with notifications in the background. The caption read: “Guess everybody heard the news.”

Williams’ return has generated immense excitement among fans and fellow players alike. In a press release, she expressed her enthusiasm about returning to the Queen’s Club. “Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter. Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
Since her last competitive match, which was a third-round exit at the US Open in 2022, Williams has not played on the tour. At the time, she avoided using the word “retirement,” instead saying she was “evolving away” from tennis. However, there have been ongoing rumors about her potential return since December, when it was revealed that she had re-entered tennis’ anti-doping programme—a necessary step to compete on the tour again.
When she first announced her return to the drug-testing pool last year, Williams wrote on social media: “Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.” Despite her initial denial, the news of her return has now become a reality.
Williams, who has also won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, has been eligible to play since February but chose to make her return during the British grass-court season. This decision marks one of the biggest sports stories of the year.
Mboko, who recently won her second-round match at the French Open, confirmed the news, expressing her excitement about partnering with Williams. “I’m very happy. Me and Serena have stayed in touch, which is really, really nice, because I really look up to her. The fact that she even knows me, it’s very exciting.”
She added, “I want to kind of let the moment (be) for her. I feel like, if she’s ready to come back on her own terms, then I feel like it’s up to her to announce that.”
Reactions from the Tennis Community
Naomi Osaka, a former Grand Slam champion, shared her thoughts on the news. “I don’t really care about tennis. I think it’s good for me. I’ll be very entertained. I think it will bring people to watch tennis, which she always does bring an audience with her. So I think it’s good. I’m going to be tuned into the first match, for sure. I think a lot of people are. Everyone knows Serena and Venus were my role models growing up, so it’s going to be cool to see her on the grounds again.”
Coco Gauff, another rising star in women’s tennis, expressed her hope to face Williams. “I did say one of my biggest regrets was not being able to play her. Everybody has been hearing rumours and stuff. So, if they are true, I guess we’ll find out in a couple days based off the rumours. We’ll see, but I think it would be cool for this sport to have a legend back playing.”

As the tennis world eagerly awaits Williams’ return, the anticipation surrounding her participation in the doubles event at the Queen’s Club is building. Her presence on the court is expected to draw massive attention and excitement from fans around the globe.
