Gunners Eye Martinelli Sale Amidst Rogers Talks

Arsenal Eyes Morgan Rogers as Key Summer Transfer Target for Title Defence

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly prioritising a move for Aston Villa’s dynamic winger Morgan Rogers as he gears up for a concerted effort to secure back-to-back Premier League titles. Following a triumphant league campaign that saw the Gunners lift their first silverware in 22 years, and despite a disappointing Champions League final exit, Arteta’s focus has swiftly shifted to strengthening his squad for the upcoming season.

Rogers, a standout performer for Aston Villa and a player increasingly tipped for an England call-up, has emerged as a prime target. Reports suggest that Arsenal have already initiated discussions with the 23-year-old’s representatives, signalling the club’s strong intent. Rogers has impressed significantly in recent seasons, showcasing a flair and consistency that has cemented his status as one of the Premier League’s most exciting talents. His potential inclusion in England’s World Cup squad further underscores his growing reputation.

While Aston Villa are understandably keen to retain their prized asset, Rogers himself is reportedly ‘open’ to a move to the reigning Premier League champions. This development could potentially complicate Villa’s stance, especially with other top clubs, including Chelsea, also rumoured to be monitoring the situation.

Squad Reshuffle Expected at the Emirates

The potential arrival of Morgan Rogers, along with other anticipated signings, is likely to necessitate a reshuffling of Arsenal’s current playing roster. According to speculation, forward Gabriel Martinelli could be the most vulnerable member of the squad to make way.

A deal for Rogers would force at least one member of Arteta’s squad out of the Emirates Stadium and
talkSPORT
say Gabriel Martinelli is the ‘most vulnerable’ in that regard.
Martinelli is Arsenal’s longest-serving player, having made close to 300 appearances for the Gunners since his debut in 2019.
The Brazilian has become an increasingly bit-part player in north London, however, and contributed just one Premier League goal last season.

Despite being Arsenal’s longest-serving player and having amassed nearly 300 appearances since joining in 2019, Martinelli’s role has diminished in recent seasons. His contribution of just one Premier League goal last season has led to questions about his future at the club.

Furthermore, the future of Leandro Trossard could also come under scrutiny if Arsenal successfully recruit Rogers and another attacking reinforcement. Trossard has reportedly attracted interest from both Besiktas and a number of other Premier League clubs, indicating a potential market for his services should he become surplus to requirements.

Adding to the uncertainty, earlier this month, it was reported that Arsenal were also open to considering offers for striker Gabriel Jesus and defender Ben White, following seasons that were deemed underwhelming by some observers.

Julian Alvarez: Arteta’s Top Striking Ambition?

Beyond the pursuit of Morgan Rogers, reports indicate that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has identified Atletico Madrid’s prolific striker Julian Alvarez as his primary summer transfer target. Alvarez has enjoyed a remarkable two-season spell at Atletico Madrid since his move from Manchester City, netting an impressive 49 goals. He is widely regarded as a significant upgrade on Arsenal’s £64 million acquisition last summer, Viktor Gyokeres.

Football pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink shared his insights on Arsenal’s interest in Alvarez, highlighting the Argentine’s distinct qualities.

“He’s totally different from someone like Gyokeres,” Hasselbaink commented. “I like him, I really like him. He is somebody who obviously scores goals. I think in a more attacking team than the one he is playing for now, he would score a lot more goals. He has done exceptionally well at Atletico Madrid, who are quite defensive and don’t attack as much. I really like him – his combination play is really good.”

Hasselbaink also offered a nuanced view on Alvarez’s potential fit at Arsenal: “But then on the other hand, would he be a good player for Arsenal? Yes, but I think Arsenal would have to change a little bit how they play to get the best out of him. If they’re going to expect him to do a lot of defending and all that kind of stuff, then he’s going to have the same kind of season as he did at Atletico. I think if you tweak the system a little bit, he can score 30-odd goals.”

Arteta’s strategic approach to the transfer window suggests a clear ambition to not only retain their league title but also to mount a serious challenge for European honours. The potential acquisitions of players like Morgan Rogers and Julian Alvarez signal a determined effort to bolster the squad with top-tier talent, ensuring Arsenal remains a formidable force in both domestic and continental competitions.
