Opposition’s divisions hinder challenge to Tinubu in 2027 — CUPP spokesperson

The State of the Opposition in Nigeria

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has long been seen as a key player in the opposition against the ruling government. However, its current state raises serious concerns about its effectiveness and relevance. According to Mark Adebayo, the National Publicity Secretary of CUPP, the coalition is currently in what he calls a “self-induced coma.” This metaphor highlights the lack of direction and leadership that has plagued the organization.

Adebayo points out that during the 2019 elections, when Olagunsoye Oyinlola was at the helm, CUPP was active and engaged. The coalition had a clear structure, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) providing office space and support. However, after the 2019 general elections, things fell apart. Adebayo believes that Atiku Abubakar actually won the election but was unfairly deprived of victory due to alleged rigging. Since then, the coalition has struggled to regain its footing.

Leadership and Internal Challenges

One of the main challenges facing CUPP is the absence of strong leadership. After the 2019 elections, the coalition became “orphaned,” with little support from key figures. It was only through the efforts of Ugochinyere Imo that some activities continued. Despite this, the coalition has lacked the necessary structure and discipline to function effectively. Adebayo emphasizes that without clear leadership and a unified strategy, CUPP cannot fulfill its role as a national megaphone for opposition voices.

The broader opposition in Nigeria also faces significant challenges. Many parties, including the PDP, are plagued by internal crises and factional disputes. These divisions weaken their ability to present a united front against the ruling party. For example, the PDP’s refusal to zone its presidential ticket in 2023 led to serious internal conflicts. Similarly, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is now facing similar issues, with concerns about how it will handle the 2027 elections.

The Need for Unity and Strategy

Adebayo argues that the opposition lacks ideological clarity and often engages in politics of convenience rather than strategy. Defections are driven by self-interest, with many politicians moving to the ruling party while still claiming to oppose it. This further weakens the opposition’s credibility and effectiveness.

To be effective, the opposition must adopt a more proactive approach. It needs to engage with the grassroots and develop clear, realistic strategies that can inspire confidence among its members and the electorate. Without a coherent vision and disciplined leadership, the opposition risks losing momentum and relevance.

Concerns About the Current Administration

Mark Adebayo expresses concern about the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, particularly regarding the issue of insecurity. Persistent violence, kidnappings, and banditry continue to threaten the safety of citizens and undermine social stability. While there are signs of economic improvement, Adebayo emphasizes that security remains the foundation upon which all progress must be built.

He commends the sacrifices of the armed forces, who continue to defend the nation. However, he believes that their efforts must be supported through collective action, including contributions from private citizens and well-meaning individuals to assist the families of fallen heroes.

The 2027 Re-Election Bid

Given the current state of the opposition, Adebayo doubts whether the opposition will be able to mount a serious challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 re-election bid. He points out that the opposition’s internal contradictions, lack of discipline, and poor strategic planning have limited its effectiveness. To succeed, the opposition must address these issues and adopt a more inclusive and structured approach.

Building strong coalitions across different political and regional interests is essential for long-term relevance. Additionally, the opposition must develop clear, forward-looking strategies that can inspire confidence among its members and the wider electorate.

Confidence in INEC

Regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Adebayo acknowledges its crucial role in Nigeria’s democracy. However, he stresses that confidence in the electoral system should not rest solely on INEC. The opposition must also act strategically to ensure accountability. This includes proper monitoring, deployment of party agents, and use of legal frameworks to challenge irregularities.

Adebayo also emphasizes the importance of voter education and training for party agents to improve efficiency at polling units. Strong coordination among party structures at all levels will help reduce loopholes that could be exploited.

Resignation of INEC Chairman

Some ADC leaders and stakeholders have called for the resignation of the INEC chairman over allegations of partisan behavior. Adebayo suggests that if the allegations are proven with credible evidence, resignation would be appropriate. However, he cautions against rushing to judgment based on political sentiment. Due process must be followed, and decisions must be based on verifiable facts.
