Man Wields Knife, Traps Shoppers in Store Panic

Shoppers Take Cover as Knife Incident Sparks Concern in Melbourne Mall

A tense situation unfolded at the Forest Hill Shopping Centre in east Melbourne on Thursday, when a man was seen carrying a large knife inside the busy mall. The incident caused panic among shoppers, who quickly barricaded themselves inside stores for safety.

The 30-year-old man was captured on camera holding a large knife with a red handle around 11:50 am. According to reports, he threatened several shoppers, including mothers with children. The footage was shared widely on social media, raising concerns about public safety.

Victoria Police responded swiftly to the incident. Officers were seen speaking to the man as he sat slumped on the floor of the shopping centre with his arms behind his back. One officer was seen holding the knife while wearing blue gloves, indicating caution during the encounter.

Local witness Lou, speaking to 3AW radio, described the scene. He said the man had been “pacing up and down” near the Coles supermarket. “There’s a gentleman outside the Coles supermarket with headphones on that was pacing up and down near the escalators with a knife,” he explained. “The police have arrived, I think there’s four police cars in attendance. When I left, the police had already arrived and should have him by now.”

Lou added that the knife appeared to be “a butcher’s boning knife, about eight inches long.” His account highlights the level of concern among those present during the incident.

Victoria Police confirmed that the man was arrested at the shopping centre. A statement from the department read: “Officers were called to reports the man was carrying the weapon at the Canterbury Road complex about 11:50 am. There were no threats made with the weapon and no injuries. Police attended and arrested the 30-year-old Box Hill man without incident. He was transported to hospital for assessment and is expected to be interviewed.”

The incident has sparked strong reactions from the public, with many expressing their shock and frustration. Social media users took to platforms to voice their opinions.

One person wrote: “Melbourne… once the greatest city in the world.” Another commented: “And Jacinta [Allan] claims Victoria is ‘SAFE’.” A third user added: “If you are confronted with knives or machetes whilst doing a grocery shop – the states got a huge fricken problem. Vote her OUT!”

Another individual shared their personal experience: “I was just there buying a bahn mi, nearly fell to my knees.”

The event has raised questions about security measures in public spaces and the need for increased vigilance. While no one was injured, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community awareness and quick response from authorities.

As the investigation continues, local residents and visitors alike remain on high alert. The community is hoping for clarity and reassurance that such incidents will not become a regular occurrence in the future.
