Astronaut’s 300-Day Space Milestone: ‘Space Cake’ Delivered to ISS

Astronauts on the International Space Station are typically involved in cutting-edge scientific experiments or witnessing stunning views of space. However, for a few recent milestones, some of the crew members temporarily set aside their spacesuits and put on aprons instead. Baking a cake to celebrate their colleagues was an unusual but heartwarming way to mark these occasions.

The International Space Station has been orbiting Earth for over 25 years, usually at an altitude of about 260 miles. It has served as a home for astronauts from around the world and has been a platform for scientific research in microgravity. Over time, the station has also opened up to private commercial missions. The orbital laboratory is operated through a global partnership involving NASA, Roscosmos, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency.

More than 290 spacefarers from 26 countries have visited the ISS, including 170 from the United States alone, according to NASA.

NASA astronauts recently created a unique dessert that they called a “space cake.” This special treat was made to celebrate milestone achievements by some of the crew members. Jessica Meir, a NASA astronaut, shared her experience of creating the cake on social media. She described the process as an art form that required creativity and resourcefulness, given the limited baking supplies available on the ISS.

Meir credited the Russian cosmonauts aboard the station for the creative confection, which was made to mark her 300th day in space since her first trip in 2020. The cake also celebrated NASA astronaut Jack Hathaway and French astronaut Sophie Adenot, who each reached their 100th day in space – all on their first spaceflight.

While the cake looked similar to a giant Rice Krispies treat, Meir did not share details about the ingredients or the process used to make it. The USA TODAY Network contacted NASA for more information but had not received a response as of June 1.

Currently, seven astronauts are living and working aboard the International Space Station as part of Expedition 74. This includes four members of the Crew-12 mission, which docked in mid-February. The crew consists of NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, as well as European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. They are scheduled to depart in September following the arrival of Crew-13.

In addition, NASA astronaut Chris Williams and Russians Sergey Mikaev and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, who arrived at the end of November on a Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft, will remain on the station until their replacements arrive in July.

The creation of the “space cake” highlights the camaraderie and ingenuity of the astronauts on the ISS. Despite the challenges of limited resources and the unique environment of space, the crew continues to find ways to celebrate important moments. These small acts of kindness and creativity not only bring the team closer together but also serve as a reminder of the human spirit that drives exploration beyond our planet.
