Subaru Australia has rolled out a new special edition of its popular Crosstrek SUV, the AWD Sport, building on the success of last year’s limited-run Onyx model. This latest iteration, available now, is based on the mid-spec AWD 2.0R petrol-only variant. While it commands a $3,000 premium over the 2.0R, it sits at the same price point as the flagship 2.0S, retailing for $43,990 before on-road costs.

The AWD Sport distinguishes itself with a suite of cosmetic enhancements and premium touches, though it offers no changes to its powertrain or hybrid capabilities. Externally, the special edition receives a gloss-black finish on its alloy wheels, rear spoiler, and tailgate garnish. Adding a distinctive flair are gold accents, specifically a gold surround for the front fog lamps and gold stitching on the steering wheel. A subtle “Sport” badge on the rear further denotes its unique status.

Inside, the Crosstrek AWD Sport features ‘tricot’ cloth upholstery, similar to that found in the entry-level AWD 2.0L and Hybrid L models. However, this material is enhanced with “gold accents,” setting it apart from the ‘premium cloth’ of the 2.0R and the synthetic leather found in the 2.0S and Hybrid S variants.

Enhanced Comfort and Convenience Features

While the upholstery might echo entry-level models, the AWD Sport borrows several comfort and convenience features typically reserved for higher trims. Mirroring the 2.0R, 2.0S, and Hybrid S, the driver’s seat boasts electric adjustment, a step up from the manual controls in the 2.0L and Hybrid L. This electric adjustment includes a two-position memory function and lumbar support, ensuring optimal comfort for extended drives. Both front seats are also heated, adding a touch of luxury during cooler months.

Further elevating the cabin experience, the AWD Sport incorporates an electric sunroof, a feature previously exclusive to the 2.0S and Hybrid S grades. Satellite navigation is also standard, providing seamless navigation without relying on smartphone mirroring. However, it notably omits the premium 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, retaining the six-speaker setup found in other models.

Exterior Colour Palette and Powertrain Details

The exterior colour options for the Crosstrek AWD Sport are somewhat more curated than the standard range. Buyers can choose from Crystal White, Crystal Black, Ice Silver, and Magnetite Grey. This selection excludes popular shades like Sand Dune, Sapphire Blue, Pure Red, and Citron Yellow, which are available on other Crosstrek models. A notable perk is that premium paint colours are included in the AWD Sport’s recommended retail price (RRP), a saving of $660 typically incurred on other Crosstrek grades.

Under the bonnet, the AWD Sport remains powered by the familiar 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder ‘boxer’ petrol engine. This unit produces 115kW of power and 196Nm of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) automatic and Subaru’s renowned all-wheel-drive system. The combined fuel consumption is rated at a respectable 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

Future Hybrid Prospects Remain Unconfirmed

Subaru Australia has yet to confirm the production numbers for the AWD Sport special edition, leaving its long-term availability open. In parallel, Australian consumers continue to await confirmation on the local introduction of a more potent ‘strong’ hybrid version of the Crosstrek. This advanced hybrid system, already available in Japan and the United States, features a larger 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery sourced from Toyota. For context, the current Crosstrek hybrid offered in Australia integrates an electric motor and battery with its existing 2.0-litre engine, but real-world testing has indicated minimal gains in fuel efficiency or performance.
