Tottenham Hotspur Secures Jan Paul van Hecke in £52m Deal
Tottenham Hotspur have successfully completed a £52 million transfer deal to sign Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion. The 25-year-old centre-back, who was set to be out of contract next summer, has now joined the North London club, marking a significant move in their efforts to strengthen the squad.
The decision to bring Van Hecke to Spurs comes after a challenging 2025-26 Premier League season, where the team narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the campaign. This result highlighted the need for immediate improvements, particularly in defensive stability. Despite two initial bids being rejected, a final agreement has been reached with Brighton, with the fee fixed at £52 million.
Van Hecke’s arrival is part of a broader strategy led by manager Roberto De Zerbi, who previously worked with the player during his time at Brighton. At that time, Van Hecke developed into one of the league’s most promising central defenders, known for his composure and ability to play out from the back.

De Zerbi has emphasized the importance of learning from the recent struggles, as the club’s majority owners, the Lewis family, have committed to supporting a comprehensive rebuild following consecutive 17th-placed finishes. The defensive vulnerabilities were evident, with Tottenham conceding a staggering 122 goals across the last two Premier League seasons.
Van Hecke’s signing follows earlier acquisitions such as left-back Andy Robertson and centre-back Marcos Senesi, both of whom have contributed to strengthening the backline. The Dutch defender began his career in the Netherlands with NAC Breda before making the move to Brighton in 2020. His rise to prominence came under De Zerbi during the 2023-24 season, when he made 40 appearances and played a crucial role in Brighton’s historic qualification for European competition.
Now, Van Hecke will join his Netherlands international teammate Micky van de Ven at Tottenham, further enhancing the defensive options available to the manager. His arrival is expected to provide much-needed stability and leadership in the centre of the pitch.
Meanwhile, Brighton are reportedly looking to target Tottenham’s centre-back Luka Vuskovic as a potential replacement. However, two of their recent bids for the player have already been rejected, according to reports.
As the club moves forward, the focus remains on building a stronger, more cohesive team capable of competing at the highest level. With Van Hecke’s arrival, Spurs are taking another step toward achieving this goal.
