Essendon’s Coach Hunt Divides the Greats

Essendon is currently refining its requirements for a new coach, but there are growing calls for one individual on the selection panel to step back from the process.

Brad Scott’s Replacement

The search for a successor to Brad Scott remains ongoing, with several potential candidates being considered. Among them is James Hird, a former coach and club legend. Despite this, no official appointment has been made yet.

Hird has publicly expressed his hope that the club will prioritize the best interests of the playing group by conducting a thorough and transparent interview process to find the right leader. His perspective aligns with many within the Essendon community, including former great Tim Watson, who has voiced concern over the possibility of an abbreviated or biased selection process.

Watson emphasized the importance of maintaining fairness and independence in the process. He suggested that the selection panel should be “arm’s length” from the football club to avoid any conflicts of interest.

“I would be horrified if my former club didn’t run an extensive process to replace Scott,” Watson said during a recent appearance on Nine’s Footy Classified.

However, Watson also raised concerns about the role of club president Andrew Welsh on the selection panel, arguing that his presence could influence the outcome.

Differing Opinions on the Panel

Eddie McGuire, a well-known figure on Nine’s Footy Classified, disagreed with Watson’s suggestion to remove Welsh from the panel. McGuire argued that the president should have a central role in the decision-making process, as he is ultimately responsible for the club’s direction.

“He knows his stuff and is putting his life on the line and his reputation,” McGuire stated.

On the other hand, football legend Dermott Brereton supported Watson’s stance, suggesting that the selection process should involve a subcommittee of experienced individuals.

“Appoint your subcommittee, appoint all these wise football heads to make a selection and then get them to present it to the board that is headed by the president,” Brereton said. “Then they can ratify it or say, ‘go back and try again.’”

Despite differing opinions, Hird acknowledged that Welsh is likely to remain at the center of discussions regarding the new coach. However, he maintained that the process will not be a “boat race” where one candidate is favored over others.

“I don’t think it is a boat race, I think it will be a legitimate process,” Hird said.

He added that he hopes to participate in the process if given the opportunity.

“I might look silly in hindsight, but I am sitting here today saying I believe that there will be a comprehensive process that goes through all the different coaches.”

Hird emphasized that the fans, the club, and the football community deserve a fair and thorough selection process.

“Like I said three weeks ago, I want to put up my hand and go through the process if that is possible,” he said.

He also reiterated that Welsh will play a key role in the final decision.

“Andrew Welsh will be right in the middle of all this. He won’t be letting people ratify something.”
