NPFL Summons Remo Stars and Ikorodu City for Investigation Amidst Post-Match Disturbances
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has initiated a formal investigation into alleged incidents of fan unrest and physical altercations that marred the conclusion of the Matchday 20 fixture between Remo Stars and Ikorodu City. Both clubs have been summoned to an investigative hearing scheduled for Monday, January 19, at the NPFL headquarters in Abuja.
Davidson Owumi, the NPFL Chief Operating Officer, voiced significant disappointment regarding the reported disturbances. His frustration stems from the fact that these incidents occurred despite a recent reconciliation meeting involving top officials from both clubs, aimed at fostering a more harmonious relationship.
“In the light of the reports and video evidence that are in our possession, the NPFL is inviting the two clubs to an investigative hearing on Monday, January 19, at our office in Abuja,” stated the NPFL in a release issued on Thursday. Owumi elaborated that the purpose of this hearing is to thoroughly examine the immediate and underlying causes of the fracas. This will allow the league to apply the appropriate rules and sanctions to any individual or club found to be culpable.
The controversy ignited following a highly competitive South West derby played on Wednesday at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. The match, which Remo Stars ultimately secured with a 1-0 victory courtesy of a 47th-minute goal from Haruna Hadi, was played under a cloud of tension. This heightened atmosphere was a direct consequence of the reverse fixture held in Lagos in late December. That earlier encounter saw Ikorodu City emerge victorious with a 1-0 scoreline and concluded with a contentious disagreement on the touchline between representatives of the two clubs.
Recognizing the potential for escalation, the NPFL had previously intervened by facilitating peace talks at its Abuja headquarters on Tuesday. The objective of these discussions was to preempt any further animosity between the managers and supporters of these geographically close clubs.
Despite these preventative measures, the recent fixture unfolded with an atmosphere of palpable anticipation and caution. However, reports and accompanying video evidence of disturbances began to surface shortly after the final whistle, prompting the league’s swift action.
Remo Stars’ Performance and Squad Update
Remo Stars, who had temporarily relocated their home ground to the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta for the initial half of the season, used the occasion of the derby to introduce two new players to their squad. Defender Fabian Nworie was immediately integrated into the starting eleven, while new attacker Albert Korvah was presented to the team ahead of kick-off.
The hard-fought victory against Ikorodu City proved significant for the defending champions. It propelled them to 13th position in the league standings, accumulating 25 points. This win temporarily lifted them out of the relegation zone, a crucial step as they strive for greater consistency in the latter half of the season.

In a commanding performance, Shooting Stars secured a decisive 3-0 home victory over Enyimba in Ibadan. This triumph served as a form of retribution for their 1-0 defeat in the reverse fixture against Enyimba in Aba.
The league table continues to be dominated by Rivers United, who maintain their top position with 38 points. They are closely followed by Abia Warriors, who have amassed 34 points. Notably, both Remo Stars and Shooting Stars are level on points, sitting at 32 each, indicating a tightly contested battle in the mid-table and for positions higher up.
