Student Associations Condemn Political Endorsement in Ogun State
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) have expressed strong disapproval of the recent endorsement of Senator Gbenga Daniel by a group of student organizations in Ogun State. The associations described the move as inappropriate, unrepresentative, and politically driven.
In a joint statement released on Wednesday, signed by NANS National Vice President Akinbodunse Felicia and NAOSS National President Olubodun Olalekan, the two organizations emphasized that students’ main responsibility is to pursue academic excellence rather than engage in partisan politics.
“Students are not politicians. Our primary responsibility is to acquire knowledge and excel academically, not to dabble in partisan politics or endorse political aspirants,” the statement read.
The statement also made it clear that the recognized student bodies do not support the purported endorsement of Senator Daniel. It warned against using students as tools to advance personal political ambitions.
While condemning the endorsement of Daniel, NANS and NAOSS acknowledged the efforts of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration in improving education in Ogun State.
“Governor Abiodun’s administration has made remarkable strides, including improved infrastructure, provision of learning tools, and integration of ICT across schools,” the statement noted.
The associations also praised the signing into law of the appointment of Principals-General and Headmasters-General, a policy that enables teachers to attain positions equivalent to Permanent Secretaries in the civil service.
Commitment to Academic Excellence
Reaffirming their dedication to promoting students’ welfare and academic success, the student bodies urged all Ogun State students to resist political manipulation and stay focused on their studies.
“Our stance is clear: students first, politics later. By staying focused on their studies, Ogun State students can achieve greatness and contribute meaningfully to the development of the state,” the statement concluded.
This position reflects the broader concern among student leaders about the increasing politicization of student organizations. They believe that students should prioritize their education and avoid being drawn into the complexities of political campaigns.
The Role of Student Organizations
Student organizations play a vital role in shaping the academic and social environment of universities and colleges. Their influence extends beyond campus, often impacting local and national policies. However, this influence must be exercised responsibly and in alignment with the interests of students.
The actions of some student groups in Ogun State have raised questions about the direction and integrity of these organizations. While some may argue that political engagement is a form of activism, others see it as a distraction from the core mission of education.
Recommendations for Student Leaders
To prevent further politicization, student leaders are encouraged to:
- Focus on academic initiatives and programs that enhance the learning experience for students.
- Promote civic awareness and encourage participation in non-partisan activities.
- Engage in dialogue with university administrators to address concerns and improve the educational environment.
By maintaining a clear focus on academics, student organizations can continue to serve as valuable platforms for leadership development and community service.
Conclusion
The response from NANS and NAOSS highlights the importance of keeping student organizations centered on education. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for student leaders to remain committed to their primary purpose: fostering an environment where students can thrive academically and personally.
