British starlet Klugman claims first WTA Tour victory over Dart

A New Chapter for Hannah Klugman

At just 17 years old, Hannah Klugman has made a name for herself as one of the most promising talents in British tennis. Her journey to success has been marked by impressive achievements, including winning the prestigious Orange Bowl junior tournament in 2023 and reaching the girls’ final at the French Open last year. Now, she has taken another significant step forward by securing her first WTA Tour win at the Nottingham Open.

Klugman’s victory came against her compatriot Harriet Dart, a match that was both challenging and emotionally charged. The 17-year-old had an unexpected opportunity to re-enter the tournament after the withdrawal of British No 2 and two-time former champion Katie Boulter due to injury. This allowed Klugman to enter as a lucky loser and she seized the moment with determination.

“I was at home this morning,” she said. “I obviously lost on Sunday, went back home and was first out (of the draw) so my coach was telling me we have to drive up at 5am this morning. It’s been a long day for me. I’m so proud to get my first win today. It was tough to play another Brit, someone who I’ve watched when I was younger, but that’s pretty special as well.”

Klugman started the match strongly, taking control early against an out-of-sorts Dart. The 29-year-old, who also received a Wimbledon wildcard, seemed reluctant to face her young compatriot. Although Dart managed to gain some momentum in the middle of the second set, leading 4-2, Klugman quickly turned the tide with a four-game streak. She served six aces during the match, showcasing her growing confidence and skill.

Another British player, Alicia Dudeney, also received a lucky loser spot and a Wimbledon wildcard. However, she was unable to capitalize on her opportunity, losing to Dayana Yastremska in a closely contested match that ended 6-4 7-6 (2).

Klugman, who is the only home player to reach the second round, will now face fourth seed Marie Bouzkova. Meanwhile, defending champion McCartney Kessler was eliminated in the first round by fellow American Katie Volynets.

In the men’s event, which is part of the second-tier Challenger Tour, British players Jacob Fearnley and Felix Gill also secured victories, highlighting the depth of talent emerging from the country.
